Sunday 09 August 2020
The Perseid Meteor Showers return every year, in August, and can be very spectacular
Let’s meet to observe this nature show on Sunday 9th, from the top of the Salève.
We will go earlier to have a picnic, watch the sunset and then wait the time to observe them. ( It will be visible from 22h10 until midnight )
How many shooting stars will you see?
Depending on the year, between 70 and 110 shooting stars occur per hour at the time of maximum. In theory, that is more than one shooting star per minute! In theory only, because some are not very bright and it is not possible to observe the whole sky at once, we miss a lot of them. Fortunately, with a little patience, the spectacle is guaranteed: it is very rare that by observing attentively during a quarter of an hour one does not observe at least one or two beautiful shooting stars! The luckiest ones can even see several at the same time, or particularly long and bright shooting stars: it is called a meteor, or even a racing car when a large piece of rock burns for several seconds and emits a very bright light.
